Awards - Excellence in Civic Engagement

IIllinois State University’s Vision Statement for 2007 emphasized our commitment to civic engagement by stating that we are “a university that graduates individuals who are prepared to be successful, engaged and independent citizens.”

Illinois State encourages our undergraduate and graduate students to explore social and civic issues, participate in learning activities addressing social or political problems, and develop a sense of civic commitment through intentional curricular and co-curricular activities.

This Illinois State University Excellence in Civic Engagement Award was established in March 2006 to annually recognize an exemplary and ongoing group curricular or co-curricular civic engagement project that promotes intellectual and experiential student learning and understanding of civic engagement.

The Award

The Civic Engagement award of $500 is designed to be used for “public good” vs. for “private gain.” For example, the award money could be used towards continuing the winning civic engagement project or towards a community civic/social issue decided upon by the participants listed on the group roster. The $500 will be available in the new fiscal year beginning July 1, 2007.

Eligibility and Application Deadline

Eligible curricular or co-curricular civic engagement group projects MUST include undergraduate and/or graduate students as well as one or more constituencies such as faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, parents, education leaders, community members, government officials, business leaders, etc. The sustainable civic engagement group projects must have been in existence for at least two years prior to the Friday, February 16, 2007 application deadline.
